Because data dictionary changes are typical from one version to the next, you cannot skip a full version when you upgrade. For an upgrade to be completed properly, you must upgrade from, for example, Axapta version 2.5 to Axapta version 3.0 first, and then to Microsoft Dynamics AX version 4.0. If you skip a version, the data upgrade facilities cannot handle data upgrade, and you risk losing data.

Refer to the user documentation to upgrade from versions prior to 3.0.
